If you have a problem with cats coming into your garden scaring or even killing your garden birds then you may want to get a cat repellent. Although there are many cat repellents available to buy on the market there are also a number of simple things you can do and deterrents you can make from household objects.
You can surround your garden with chicken wire which leans outward from your garden. A cat will be unable to climb over a fence which is placed like this. Alternatively if you have already have a fence place some rolled up plastic on top or it or a taut wire strung about 10 cm above it. Cats will find it difficult to balance on the fence and will be less inclined to climb on it to jump from.
You can also buy special plastic strips that fit across the top of a fence to prevent a cat walking on it or try painting your fence with anti-climbing paint. Cats don't like reflective surfaces so hang a few old CDs around your garden to deter them or you could try placing a few plastic bottles filled with water around your garden. As the sun light reflects on them they will sparkle and frighten a cat away.
If you have a bird table fit a baffle or metal tube around the post. You can also grease the post which will help prevent cats from climbing it. There are a number of plants that have been cultivated to give off a scent that cats don't like. Make sure you don't plant plants that cats do like such as catnip or mint.
Cats also don't like the smell of pepper and mustard so try sprinkling some around your garden. Birds are impervious to the smell so add some to bird feeders and the food on the bird table to prevent cats going near them. You can spray cats with water to chase them out of your garden. Although cats don't like water then won't come to any harm and it may prevent them coming back. Alternatively set up an ultrasonic cat deterrent which emits a sound that can't be heard by humans but is very uncomfortable to cats.
